Great 'not in my shoes' moments in history

1852 Slave hunter Tom Loker catches up with Eliza as she tries to escape to freedom across the frozen Ohio River. An abolitionist shouts at him, “You’re a wolfhound from hell,” but Loker replies, “You don’t know my specific situation—you’re not in my shoes.”

1890 Col. James Forsyth lashes back at critics who say his 7th Cavalry soldiers at Wounded Knee massacred at least 150 Lakota Indians: “You don’t know my specific situation—you’re not in my shoes.”

1946 Nazi leader Hermann Goring testifies at the Nuremberg trials, “You don’t know my specific situation—you’re not in my shoes.”

2013 Planned Parenthood creates notinhershoes.org and declares concerning abortion, “Its complicated. … Nobody knows a woman’s specific situation—we’re not in her shoes.”
