Globe Trot: North to Canada

Are upset American voters seeking refuge across the northern border?

ELECTION 2016: Canada’s immigration website crashed, apparently due to disillusioned voters wanting to head north.

A whopping 81 percent of evangelicals voted for Donald Trump, and President Obama’s former director of faith outreach says Hillary Clinton’s campaign never did: “Hillary asked for just about every vote except this group of voters.”

Foreign Affairs has a long read on populism, pointing out it rarely divides on left-right lines.

Beyond populism, Glenn Greenwald (of Edward Snowden fame) vents about members of the pro-Clinton elite echo chamber for demonizing their victims:

“Their instruments for retaliation are Brexit and Trump. Those are their agents, dispatched on a mission of destruction: aimed at a system and culture that they regard, not without reason, as rife with corruption and, above all else, contempt for them and their welfare.”

My summary of international reaction to the election and key challenges in foreign policy facing President-elect Trump.

LIBERIA: One year ago Sierra Leone and Liberia were declared Ebola-free, but scars linger.

IRAQ: Officials have begun to identify more than 100 decapitated bodies found in a mass grave in a village retaken from ISIS southeast of Mosul.

Aid organizations say about 40,000 Iraqis have been displaced in the most recent fighting, taking refuge in northern Iraq.

SYRIA: Two refugee families are filing suit against Ireland and the EU for their handling of their cases since they arrived in Greece last year—an important challenge, potentially to the EU-Turkey deal that has essentially frozen migrants in Greece without status.

AFGHANISTAN: Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed young woman immortalized on a National Geographic cover decades ago, and recently arrested in Pakistan for fraudulent refugee identity papers, has been welcomed back to Afghanistan with her family.
