Globe Trot: Migrant crisis continues to fracture EU

GERMANY: Yesterday Germany temporarily suspended all train traffic to and from Austria as Europe continues to cope with a worsening migrant crisis. Germany reimposed document checks for all border crossers—upending Europe’s 30-year treaty guaranteeing passport-free travel—to stem the tide of migrants and send a signal to other EU countries it feels aren’t absorbing sufficient migrants.

IRAQ: Internal displacement in Iraq has reached 3.2 million, according to the International Office for Migration.

SOUTH AFRICA: Some scientists dispute the latest fossil discovery as a new species of “pre-human” and don’t believe the ancient bones have enough unique features to justify the new species label.

SAUDI ARABIA: The weekend crane collapse that killed 107 highlights a breakneck construction boom some Saudis worry isn’t fit for a holy city. The Saudis have 100,000 air-conditioned tents that can house 3 million people, and have refused to take migrant refugees at their borders.

NIGERIA: A bomb explosion inside a displacement camp in northern Nigeria killed seven, and at least one Nigerian clergyman claims he’s performed more funerals than weddings in the wake of Boko Haram terror.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: The largest—and until recently, only—orchestra in Central Africa has played on three continents, but at home its members are repairmen and vendors selling eggs and toothpaste. (Little noted fact: Earlier this year Kinshasa surpassed Paris as the world’s largest French-speaking city.)
