Concert performance by Sting marks the anniversary of the attack
FRANCE: On the one-year anniversary of terror attacks in Paris that killed 130 people, Sting reopened the Bataclan theater with a Saturday performance. “Nous ne les oublierons pas” (“We will not forget them”), the British singer said in French.
MOROCCO: At the start of a climate-change conference meant to seal the deal on the President Obama–led Paris agreement, delegates instead are trying to navigate opposition from Donald Trump. The president-elect already has tapped Myron Ebell to head the Environmental Protection Agency. Ebell is a climate-change skeptic who appealed to Congress over new EPA regulations he and others said violated the Clean Air Act.
EGYPT: Trump adviser Walid Phares told an Egyptian news outlet the president-elect will move quickly to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization.
GREECE: President Obama’s European trip, which begins today in Greece, has turned into more a “group therapy session” than the capstone foreign tour it was meant to be. Obama is expected to give a major speech in Greece on Wednesday touching on debt relief for the perennially indebted nation, but he also is expected to address the rise of populism on both sides of the Atlantic.
NEW ZEALAND: Strong aftershocks continue after a 7.8-magnitute quake in New Zealand this weekend centered near Christchurch. So far the death toll has reached two.
IRAQ: Shock and tears accompanied Iraqis returning to their homes in Nineveh Plains for Sunday prayer services, as they discovered desecrated churches and looted property. “I feel great sadness,” Iraqi teacher Sahir Shamoun told the Associated Press after driving four hours to check on his home yesterday. “I'm not sure when or if I'll be back. I think of my children, will they have a future here?”
