Four interns and a crotchety editor
A lot of folks are writing Valentine’s Day doggerel, but I want to apply my pseudo-poetic talents to our World Journalism Institute search for terrific young journalists looking for paid internships this summer (see worldji.com). With compliments to Dr. Seuss, here’s an ode regarding four tendencies we see among student journalists.
Intern 1: I like reporting, yes I do. I like to find a story. Corruption, construction, conniptions too, I like to stroll the human zoo.
Editor: But what about a council meeting? Boring sessions, members bleating? When you have to wait in line, Will you sigh or moan or whine?
Intern 2: I like to bring out happy news Features that blot out the blues. Babies, doggies, blessings all, Springtime flowers, leaves in fall.
Editor: But how far will you chase a story? A crime scene could be hugely gory. Bad news often comes in bulk. When you see misery, will you sulk?
Intern 3: I’m a writer, yes I am. I write when all is ready. When I’ve dressed, and brushed my hair, And sat down in my comfy chair.
Editor: But could you write without a fuss? On a car, or train, or bus? You and your laptop here or there? Writing stories anywhere?
Intern 4: I like the gospel, yes I do. Smells and bells and prayers too. Love and hope and no more fighting Easter bonnets, joy in writing.
Editor: Good, but that’s just half the story. Can you shrink self and seek God’s glory? In this world we live with friction: Gethsemane and crucifixion.
Based on our experience the past three summers, interns develop not only as writers but also as Christians. We want them not to be neither surface skimmers nor bottom feeders, but journalists who work hard and think hard. We want them to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, beginning right now.
