Faked out by the news?
A request for reader help
I received a letter yesterday from a WORLD Member who wrote:
“Christians need to consider how they consume media. I saw so many people I know and respect read, believe, and repost articles that were highly slanted or had inflammatory language or used faulty reasoning that led to false conclusions. One of my friends often punctuated her posts with the word ‘Truth!’ when in reality those posts could hardly be further from the truth. …
“People who care so deeply for biblical truth were unable to recognize falsehood in the media they were consuming and sharing. The problems the world faces are only going to get more complicated. We need people to be able to think and discern. To me, this election surfaced a crisis in thinking. What can we do about it? Is this something your magazine can address?”
I’d like to write a column about this next year, with several examples from people wise in their own fields but naïve when it comes to political fables. I could use your help. Could you send me an example of a fake news story you initially took to be true but only later learned was not? If I use it as an example in the column, I will not use your name (unless you specifically request that I print it).
