When the Fort Worth, Texas, City Council added "sexual orientation" to its nondiscrimination ordinance this fall, the media praised a councilman who, in a dramatic turnabout, supported the measure after previously opposing it. But the councilman who remained opposed received little attention. Clyde Picht-a former lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force-was the only council member to vote against the measure. Alabama twins Ryan and Andrew Tipton won the 2000 James and Eunice Doty People to People/Congressional Award Scholarship. The scholarship funded a trip to Egypt where the 17-year-old twins served as U.S. Student Ambassadors. To earn the award, each twin completed more than 400 hours of public service in addition to several hours of scholastic studies and physical training. They are the first Alabama residents to receive the honor.
