After noticing a small boy scavenging for food in a nearby dumpster, Texas mother of five Beatriz Salazar began a local food drive to feed 12 children in her apartment. Ten years later, her efforts have expanded into a full-time summer program called "Bea's Kids." With the help of local businesses and churches, the program provides free lunches, reading classes, and Bible lessons for about 150 Dallas-Fort Worth children every day. Dubbed the "shoe lady" by her Arvada, Colo., neighbors, Ranya Kelly has distributed more than 600,000 pairs of shoes over the last decade to children, senior citizens, and others who need them. The 43-year-old mother began her crusade after discovering 500 pairs of new shoes in a department store dumpster while searching for extra mailing boxes. The discovery motivated her to form The Redistribution Center, a nonprofit organization that has distributed over $11 million worth of clothes to the needy since 1991.
