The Pennsylvania-based Carnegie Hero Fund Commission honors individuals who risk their own lives or suffer injuries while saving the life of another. Below are two of the April honorees:

Neighbors screamed as 2-year-old Brittany Emmons ran in front of a one-ton moving van that drove into her apartment complex. But 12-year-old Cory Romero of Greeley, Colo., took action: He ran in front of the van and pushed Brittany out of the way. After rescuing her, Corey slipped and fell as one van tire rolled over his foot. After suffering severe bruises and using crutches for two weeks, Corey fully recovered. After a car accident left him crippled, 35-year-old Duane James learned to walk again with leg braces last spring-just in time to rescue 39-year-old Melissa Valles. As Mr. James drove into a turn lane, he saw Ms. Valles struggling with a 6'2" man in a parking lot. Leaving his car in the street, Mr. James hobbled to help her. He pinned down the man, who was trying to rob Ms. Valles with a 10-inch knife, until police arrived.
