The Houston Eagles soared to victory in the First Annual Homeschool Baseball World Series, defeating the Atlanta Barons 7-4. Held in Nashville, Tenn., this August, the championship game marked the culmination of five round-robin games among six teams. Graduating senior and Eagles pitcher Mark Shool scored the first run of the game on a single by junior shortstop Chris Gibson. Doug Stringer-a former homeless drug user turned inner-city pastor-has inspired a nationwide church movement. As pastor of a Houston inner-city church, he distributed to street-dwellers business cards stating "Somebody Cares" with the church phone number on it. The cards prompted hundreds of calls and spawned the birth of 12 "Somebody Cares" chapters across the nation. The Houston chapter alone has over 300 churches that jointly sponsor rallies and benevolent ministries.
