Founded in 1859 by Estonians living in St. Petersburg, Russia, St. John's Church was closed by the Soviet Union in 1930 and turned into a warehouse and workshop. After a major renovation, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Estonia reconsecrated the building in February.
