Cheers for the National Association of Evangelicals

The National Association of Evangelicals is doing today what it should be doing: rallying evangelicals to support pro-life positions. A note this morning from NAE President Leith Anderson directs attention to three pro-life amendments to the Budget Resolution, and asks for calls to senators through the Capitol Switchboard (202-224-3121). The three amendments are the:

District of Columbia Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which expresses the “sense of the Senate” (a majority opinion) regarding the abortion of pain-feeling unborn children in the District of Columbia. The amendment states that abortion should be unlawful past 20 weeks fetal age, except if necessary to save the life of the mother. Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act, which expresses the sense of the Senate that legislation should be enacted to require an abortionist, before performing an abortion on a minor from a different state, to notify one parent (unless the minor is the victim of sexual abuse or faces a life-endangering emergency, or has received permission from a court). The amendment also states that it should be a federal crime to transport a minor across a state line to circumvent a state law requiring parental involvement in the minor’s abortion decision. Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act, which expresses the sense of the Senate that legislation should be enacted to ban sex-selection abortions in the United States. The victims of sex-selection abortion are overwhelmingly female, and most sex-selection abortions are grisly, later-term operations, likely occurring after the child becomes “pain-capable.”

Some background on this last item: The United States is unusual in not restricting sex-selection through law. Four studies from liberal academic institutions—the University of California-Berkeley, the University of Texas, the University of Connecticut, and Columbia University—show sex-selection abortion taking place in the United States. The Columbia report in 2008 found “strong son bias” within some American communities, as revealed in census data, and “clear evidence of sex-selection, most likely at the prenatal stage.”

WORLD last year criticized the NAE for promoting activities most evangelicals oppose.
