Ernie Els's hopes of competing in the PGA's Players Championship were dashed by a right-hand jab and an uncompromising punching bag. Mr. Els withdrew from the tournament after injuring his right wrist while working out with a heavy bag. Mr. Els just added the punching bag to his workout, but may need to amend his style. "I'll probably strap my wrists next time," he said.... Not even the reclusive Barry Sanders can turn this one down. Mr. Sanders, who for years has spurned the limelight, was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame on March 24 along with Joe Theismann. Before playing for the Detroit Lions, Mr. Sanders was a star at Oklahoma State and was within a season's work of catching Walter Payton's NFL rushing record when he retired at age 30.... Pitchers approaching 40 are supposed to be heading for retirement. Randy Johnson is heading for the bank. The five-time Cy Young Award winner signed a two-year, $33 million contract extension that will ensure the 6-foot-10 lefthander will be in an Arizona uniform past his 42nd birthday.... David Wells's autobiography has done more than simply tarnish the Yankees' image and cost Mr. Wells $100,000 in fines. The righthander now believes New York boss George Steinbrenner is ignoring him. According to Mr. Wells, the Yankees owner gives him the cold shoulder each time the two cross paths. "It's discomforting," Mr. Wells told the New York Post. "If he's got an open window, hopefully I can fit in there. I can't go barge in there. You've got to wait in line." Said Mr. Steinbrenner: "I have no plans to do anything. How's that?"
