Just eight days after celebrating his 21st birthday, Andy Roddick entrenched himself as the next generation of American men's tennis. The stage could not have been set any better for Mr. Roddick at the U.S. Open. With the old generation-Pete Sampras and Michael Chang-retiring during the tournament, Mr. Roddick picked up his first Grand Slam championship. Now only Andre Agassi remains from the generation that took over from Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe.

The Maurice Clarett situation seems like it changes faster and more often than the weather in the Midwest. Weeks ago, it seemed the Ohio State runner was headed for a six-game suspension. Then, it seemed the university might be more lenient. Now it appears Mr. Clarett's career with the Buckeyes might be over. The running back might even challenge the NFL's age limit.

Earlier this year, Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning didn't have much good to say about Mike Vanderjagt, the Colts "idiot kicker," who attacked Mr. Manning's passion for the game after the 2002-03 season. But it was the kicker's three field goals in week one that led Indianapolis to victory. "I'm one of the boys on the team, not some idiot kicker," Mr. Vanderjagt said.
