It so happens there was something wrong with golf star David Duval when he said he felt out of sorts after a second-round 80 at the Ford Championship at Doral. He was diagnosed earlier this month with vertigo, which he said could last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months.... At 22, Martina Hingis's nine-year tennis career is finished. Multiple ankle surgeries have made a return to competitive play too painful. "My dreams are over," she told the Zurich daily Tagesanzeiger. "It's sad to have to end everything at 22, but sometimes you have to open your eyes." ... District of Columbia officials presented a plan to bring baseball back to the nation's capital after a 30-year absence. Major League Baseball is considering the nation's capital-as well as the D.C. suburbs of Virginia and Portland, Ore.-to relocate the struggling Montreal Expos as early as 2004.... Bob Knight's income-tax return next year is bound to look a little odd. The Texas Tech men's basketball coach told the school to keep his salary-all $250,000 of it-because he didn't do a very good job.... Feminist Martha Burk is suing the city of Augusta, Ga., after her request to protest at Augusta National's front gate was denied. She is seeking to protest during the third round of the Masters on April 12.... In the final two days before the trade deadline, each of the National Hockey League's 30 teams made some kind of deal; talent-rich teams got richer and teams fading from the playoff hunt dumped salaries-girding themselves for the salary cap that is likely to come after the NHL's collective bargaining agreement expires after the 2004 season.
