Forget trying to analyze the nine-player Golden StateÐDallas trade finalized on Aug. 19. Think of the trade from the perspective of Antawn Jamison, who leaves the pitiful Warriors for the Mavericks, one of the NBA's elite teams. "It's like the first day of school," or, "Christmas all over again," Mr. Jamison told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.... When USA basketball called New Jersey forward Kenyon Martin and asked him to step in for Karl Malone, who left the team after his mother died, Mr. Martin knew he had to drop everything and go. Problem: He and his wife were hours away from boarding a plane to Aruba to celebrate their honeymoon. Mrs. Martin graciously accepted the change of plans from beach life to working vacation.... According to Hall-of-Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt, baseball commissioner Bud Selig will announce a decision on Pete Rose's reinstatement petition after the World Series.... Sometimes it's the infamous records that grab the headlines. Pirates third baseman Jose Hernandez is again creeping closer to Bobby Bonds's single-season record for strikeouts (189). Last season Mr. Hernandez got benched-after he reached 188 strikeouts-to avoid the shame.... Look out '62 Mets. After a 5-4 loss to Texas on Aug. 19, the Detroit Tigers dropped to 31-93. The Motor City Kitties are on pace to lose 121 games this year. If that holds up, the Tigers would surpass the 1962 Mets, who lost an incredible 120 games-baseball's tragic number-in their first season. More bad news: The Tigers have series left against the Royals, Twins, White Sox, and Yankees.
