A marriage not made in heaven
I received the following email from someone I know:
“Some Christians might be shocked to learn that Jesus Christ is one of the Main High Magicians in the Beauty and Truth Lab’s pantheon of deities and avatars. They may believe that people like us—Goddess-worshipping tantric Sufi Qabalist pagans who hang around with Zen trickster witches and espouse a socialist libertarian political philosophy—couldn’t possibly have an intimate and vivid relationship with the cosmic hero they claim to own. They act as if they have commandeered the trademark of one of the smartest wild men in history.”
There were several more paragraphs, but you get the idea. It didn’t sound like her voice. My husband checked it out and, sure enough, it was taken verbatim from an astrology website.
It just so happens that as I read through my Bible every day, I always jot the word “astrology” in the top margin of the page when I come across a reference to it. So I sent my correspondent the following references:
Exodus 7:11; 8:18; 9:11; 22:18, 20 Leviticus 19:31; 20:27 Deuteronomy 4:19; 18:10-11; 32:17 1 Kings 11:4-8 (Solomon married many foreign women, and they turned his heart from God by getting him to build temples to goddesses, such as the one in this passage, Ashtoreth, the Canaanite goddess of fertility whose worship involved sexual rites and astrology.) 2 Kings 17:16-18; 21:3-6; 23:4-7, 24 Isaiah 34:4; 47:9, 12-13 Jeremiah 7:17-18; 8:1-2; 19:13; 27:9; 50:36 Daniel 4:7 Micah 5:12 Zephaniah 1:5 Malachi 3:5I told her that trying to marry the true worship of God with astrology is as old as Nimrod’s wife, Semiramus. It is the Enemy’s oldest trick, that ancient seducer who goes by the name of “The Angel of Light.” The marrying of Christ to astrology will never fly. It was the constant, recalcitrant attempt to forge that union that finally brought God’s judgment upon Israel and banished them into exile.
I also reminded the young woman of this: Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). He also said, “… No one comes to the Father but by me” (John 14:6).
But I believe she already knew that—because I told her many years ago.
