A generation of gender benders

The next time I complain that I don’t understand why God phrased something the way He did in His Word, remind me of what I am about to tell you.

When the Pharisees attempt another round of “gotcha” with a convoluted question for Jesus about divorce, His answer goes like this:

“From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. Therefore a man shall leave his mother and father and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall be one flesh” (Mark 10:6-8).

I have always found the “male and female” part of His comment to be superfluous and a non sequitur: Why would Jesus find it necessary to emphasize that God made people into two kinds: “male and female”?

That’s so obvious as to go without saying. Isn’t it?

Now I know why, thanks to a recent New York Times article “Generation LGBTQIA.” It is an introduction to this year’s freshman class at the august Ivy League University of Pennsylvania, with interviews of Stephen (née Kathlyn), Richard (also female at birth), Britt (who calls herself “bi-gender”), Kate (she identifies as “agender” and used the singular pronoun “they” in high school), and others who defy any gender categorization.

To strain your suspense no further, the “Q” in the increasingly unwieldy acronym stands either for “Questioning” or “Queer.” “I” is for “intersex,” a person whose anatomy is neither completely male nor female. “A” means “ally,” a supporter of the movement, or “asexual,” a person with no sexual attraction. A professor at the school makes this telling comment:

“When you see terms like L.G.B.T.Q.I.A., it’s because people are seeing all the things that fall out of the binary, and demanding that a name come into being.”

“Binary” is what Jesus was doing: “male and female.” Binary is so yesterday. But does the fact that Jesus emphasized this “binary” classification of human beings before the LGBTQIA generation had been conceived of in anyone’s wildest dreams indicate that He foresaw the depths of future depravity and was speaking to it in advance?

“The law of the LORD is perfect” (Psalm 19:7).

Let us pray for the grandchildren of the hippies who broke free of the yoke of the authority of God. Let us mourn for what we elders have created, a bevy of babies so unhappy and confused that they have not the first idea who or what they are. Call them, if you will, “USCG”: the Utterly Sexually Confused Generation.”
