Zika hits Miami’s South Beach
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has added Miami’s South Beach neighborhood to its travel warning for pregnant women over fears of Zika-related birth defects. The warning came hours after Florida health officials confirmed five cases of Zika infection transmitted by local mosquitos in the area. Two of the infected patients are area residents and three are tourists—from New York, Texas, and Taiwan. South Beach is popular with visitors because of its pristine white sand, trendy nightclubs, and constant parade of haute couture. Gov. Rick Scott said today state officials would not advise people to stay away, unless they are pregnant. South Beach is the second area in Miami-Dade County to confirm local Zika virus transmissions.
