WWII-era bomb found near London airport
Officials in London closed a small airport popular with business travelers Monday after construction crews discovered an unexploded World War II–era bomb nearby. Workers found the 5-foot-long shell buried in silt in the River Thames. Police closed the London City Airport and evacuated nearby residents as a precaution while the Royal Navy worked to remove the shell. Officials said the effort likely will continue into Tuesday. The airport’s single runway parallels east London’s docklands, an area heavily bombed during World War II. London City served about 4.5 million passengers last year.
