Winter weather brings South to a standstill

Winter weather continued to wreak havoc across the South on Thursday, even as temperatures began to creep above freezing. Officials in Atlanta canceled 200 flights at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the world’s busiest. Another 700 flights failed to take off or land there Wednesday after the storm blanketed the city with snow and ice. In New Orleans, officials issued a boil water notice for most of the city after broken pipes caused a drop in pressure. The storm, which stretched from Alabama to North Carolina and spread sub-freezing temperatures across an even wider area, killed at least 10 people. The Carolinas bore the brunt of the misery, enduring about a foot of snow that shut down roads, schools, and businesses. This is the second storm of the season to disrupt life in Southern states, which aren’t equipped to deal with so much cold and snow.
