Wildfires damage homes, resort in Tennessee
Wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains have forced thousands of people from their homes and destroyed some tourist attractions. Fire engulfed or damaged hundreds of homes and other buildings, including a 16-story hotel, in Gatlinburg, Tenn. About 14,000 residents and visitors have evacuated Gatlinburg, and more are leaving nearby Pigeon Forge. A relentless drought set the stage for wildfires that spread across the South over the past few weeks in Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. The latest fires grew Monday night when high winds blew trees into power lines. Officials with Dollywood, the amusement park named after country music singer Dolly Parton, said the theme park in Pigeon Forge wasn't damaged, but more than a dozen cabins operated by the park were. Dollywood suspended park operations at least through Wednesday.
