Wildfires burn across Greek islands
Thousands of people on Monday were evacuated from the Greek islands of Rhodes, Corfu, and Evia as wildfires continued to burn. The fires began last week, and at least 19,000 people were evacuated from Rhodes over the weekend. Many Greek islands are popular tourist destinations, and some airlines offered extra flights Monday to evacuate international passengers. Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis on Monday said several areas in Greece were at extreme risk of fires. Authorities are still investigating how the fires started.
Are the fires elsewhere in the country? Firefighters on Monday attempted to control a fire near Athens. Countries including Croatia, France, Italy, and Turkey have sent equipment and reinforcements to help battle the fires.
