Volkswagen to pay over $10 billion to right emissions wrongs
Volkswagen has agreed to a $10.2 billion settlement in its diesel emissions cheating case in the U.S., two people briefed on the matter said Thursday. The company designed diesel engines to turn on emissions controls during lab tests and turn them off while on the road. Volkswagen will either fix about 482,000 owners’ cars for free or buy them back and compensate the owners. Some of the funds will go to pay government penalties, too.
