Violent protests are Hong Kong’s new normal
Police in Hong Kong used tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons Sunday to clear out unsanctioned protests. Hong Kong banned pro-democracy demonstrations last weekend, but protesters continued undeterred and responded to the police by hurling petrol bombs and bricks. More demonstrations are expected on Tuesday to mark the 70th anniversary of the Communist Party taking power in China.
What are the plans for the anniversary? Hong Kong canceled most of its events commemorating the anniversary due to the unrest, but Chief Executive Carrie Lam will still lead a delegation from the semi-autonomous territory to Beijing to participate in the activities. China plans a military parade to showcase its advanced weaponry, including a supersonic drone and a robot submarine.
