Violent clashes mar Kenyan election repeat

Police in Kenya killed at least one person Thursday as protesters in the country’s opposition strongholds challenged the ongoing disputed election. Protesters in the western city of Kisumu and parts of the capital city of Nairobi set fires to barricades and threw rocks at security forces. Police responded with tear gas and live bullets. Authorities confirmed at least one death and three others wounded. The electoral chaos began after officials declared President Uhuru Kenyatta the winner of the initial Aug. 8 election. The Kenyan Supreme Court nullified the results, citing irregularities, and called for a redo on Oct. 26. But opposition leader Raila Odinga argued the electoral commission did not make sufficient changes to ensure free and fair elections. He withdrew from the election in protest and on Wednesday called for opposition supporters to boycott the polls. Fewer voters turned out during the second election to cast their ballots, and some designated polling stations in opposition strongholds remained shut.
