Violence erupts during anti-Trump protest in Oregon
Protesters against Donald Trump’s election took to the streets in Portland, Ore. last night. Some 4,000 people marched and chanted “we reject the president-elect” in the downtown area. The protest started as a peaceful demonstration, but turned violent when some protesters started smashing store windows, lighting fireworks, spray-painting buildings, and vandalizing cars. The crowd reportedly threw glass bottles and trash at the police, who used flash-bang devices and types of smoke and tear gas to force the protesters to disperse. After midnight and several orders to disperse, police used “less lethal munitions,” such as pepper spray and rubber projectiles, on those who refused to leave. The numbers dwindled by the early morning. Police made 26 arrests.
