Vietnam braces for Typhoon Doksuri

Vietnamese officials on Thursday ordered evacuations and banned sailing and fishing ahead of Doksuri, which could be the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit the country in a decade. The storm slammed into the Philippines on Tuesday as a tropical depression, killing at least four people. Six others remain missing. The Vietnamese national weather forecast center said the storm strengthened to a typhoon and likely will hit central Vietnam by Friday. Forecasters warned of heavy rains, floods, and landslides. The Southeast Asian nation routinely faces seasonal storms and floods from May through October. In Japan’s southern Ryukyu Islands, residents are dealing with power outages after another typhoon brought strong winds and heavy rainfall. Forecasters said that storm also could cause heavy rains in some cities in Taiwan.
