Venezuelans protest one-sided election

Hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets of Caracas, Venezuela, on Sunday protesting what the U.S. State Department called a rigged election. Opponents of President Nicolas Maduro boycotted the election to replace the National Assembly with a new group of lawmakers loyal to Maduro. They said the election itself was unconstitutional. The new legislature could rewrite Venezuela’s constitution to give Maduro dictatorial power. At times, demonstrations turned violent, and authorities said one of the pro-Maduro candidates was shot dead in his home over the weekend. At a pro-government rally Saturday, Maduro said the Trump administration was interfering in Venezuelan politics by backing the protesters. The United States has imposed sanctions on 13 top Venezuelan officials for the one-sided vote.
