Venezuelan opposition leaders taken from homes

Venezuela’s intelligence services arrested two opposition leaders early Tuesday morning following Sunday’s controversial election that drew international criticism and sanctions from the United States. Political activist Leopoldo Lopez and former Caracas mayor Antonio Ledezma had previously been placed under house arrest. Lopez’s wife, Lilian Tintori, posted a video Tuesday morning on Twitter showing authorities taking her husband in a car marked “SEBIN,” an abbreviation for the country’s intelligence service. Ledezma’s wife and children also tweeted that SEBIN had taken him from his home. The arrests come after a disputed election to replace the National Assembly with a majority of President Nicolas Maduro’s supporters. In a Monday evening broadcast on national television, Maduro said the U.S. sanctions do not intimidate him.
