Uncle calls suspects losers who couldn't settle in the U.S.

The uncle of the brothers suspected of planting Monday’s bombs at the Boston Marathon urged his nephew to turn himself in and stop bringing shame on the family.

Ruslan Tsarni, who identified himself as the brother of Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s father, said he wanted to deliver condolences and share grief with the real victims—those killed in the bombings.

“I’ve been following it from day one but never, ever would imagine that somehow the children of my brother would be associated with that,” he said, referring to the attack and the manhunt for those responsible.

Tsarni said he had not seen his nephews since December 2005 and had no idea why they might have wanted to hurt others. The only motivation he could imagine was resentment toward other immigrants who managed to integrate successfully into American society: “Being losers, hatred to those who were able to settle themselves … these are the only reasons I can imagine. Anything else, anything to do with religion, with Islam, is a fake.”

Tsarni said he did not think his nephews had any ill will toward the United States but couldn’t be sure because he hadn’t spoken to them in so long. They never lived with him or his family, Tsarni said.

He also said he didn’t think the bombing had anything to do with Chechnya or the separatist movement there.

“If I thought they were involved in anything like this, I would have turned them into responsibility myself,” he said.
