Ukrainian troops take Russian stronghold
Ukraine on Sunday confirmed that troops recaptured Lyman, a railway and cargo station in the north Donetsk province—a place in one of the regions Russia said it’s annexing. One Ukrainian soldier said the rail station supplied Russian troops with food and weapons in the southern Russian-occupied territory. The supply line could affect an estimated 25,000 Russian troops. Russia’s lower house stamped the documents Monday for formal annexation. The upper house will likely sign them Tuesday.
Are they making other gains? Ukraine is pushing deeper into regions that Russia is trying to annex. Ukraine has not confirmed the gains but gave some details showing Ukrainian troops behind the former war front. Russia’s military leaders also acknowledged it. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also applied for a fast-tracked NATO membership Friday. Nine members supported it, but Ukraine will need support from all 30.
