Ukraine’s new military leader commits to better troop rotation, weapons

Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrsyki wrote on social media Friday that his immediate goals are to improve the rotation of troops at the front lines and use powerful new technologies. Specifically, he mentioned weapons supplied by international partners, unmanned systems, and “modern means of radio-electronic warfare.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tapped Syrsyki for the position earlier this week after removing popular Gen. Valerii Zaluzhnyi.

How do Ukrainians feel about the change in command? In Kyiv on Friday dozens of people protested Zaluzhnyi’s removal. A poll in early December found that 92 percent of the public trust Zaluzhnyi, according to The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology. The institute also found most respondents would react negatively to the general’s dismissal.
