U.S. women going home after surprise soccer upset
Sweden eliminated the U.S. women’s soccer team from the Olympic tournament today, beating them 4-3 in the quarterfinal match. The Americans, favorites to win gold for the fourth time in a row, kept control of the ball but failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities to score. The Swedes put up a plucky defense against the reigning world champions. They opened the scoring with a second-half goal on counterattack. Alex Morgan equalized with 13 minutes on the clock. But despite both teams’ desperate efforts, the game went into overtime and then to penalty kicks. Morgan and Christen Press missed. Sweden’s Lisa Dahlkvist didn’t. It was the first ever women’s shootout in Olympic soccer and the first time Sweden will play in the semifinals since 2004. The Swedes will face either Brazil or Australia on Tuesday, while the U.S. women go home.
