U.S., U.K. impose fresh sanctions on Iran after Israel attack

The United States placed new sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran on Thursday. The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control added sanctions targeting 16 individuals and several companies aiding Iran’s production of drones and other arms. The United Kingdom also added sanctions on seven individuals and six entities to 400-plus sanctions previously imposed on Iran, the government announced Thursday. Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Israel Katz on Sunday asked international leaders for more sanctions against Iran after its massive aerial strike on Israel over the weekend.

What kind of sanctions? Both U.K. and U.S. sanctions target people and entities involved in or related to Iran’s production of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Americans are barred from doing business with five other companies linked to Iran’s Khuzestan Steel Company. Khuzestan is one of the country’s largest steel producers and is a multi-billion dollar industry in Iran. Britain’s sanctions did not include steel production but rather named top leaders in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and government. Britain also targeted several leaders in Iran’s state-owned Aerospace Industries Organization.
