U.K. government blocking sick baby’s travel

Britain’s foreign secretary rejected an offer by the Vatican to take in 11-month-old Charlie Gard, a terminally ill child whose parents want to try an experimental treatment. Specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, backed by several court rulings, refuse to provide the treatment, saying it won’t help Charlie and may cause him to suffer more. Several hospitals abroad, including one in Vatican City and one in the United States, have offered to treat Charlie, and his parents have raised enough money to transport him. But U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano on Wednesday that he supported the courts’ decisions to refuse to allow Charlie to travel abroad for treatment.
