Twin Afghan suicide blasts kill 25 people

Islamic State militants on Monday claimed responsibility for two suicide blasts in the Afghan capital that killed at least 25 people, including journalists, and injured 27 others. The first bomb went off in the Shash Darak area of Kabul, near NATO headquarters and some foreign embassies. Police said the second suicide bomber detonated his explosive after reporters and first responders rushed to the scene of the first attack. The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee said eight journalists died in the blast. Agence France-Presse confirmed its chief Afghan photographer, Shah Marai, was among the casualties, and Reuters said one of its photographers also sustained some injuries. Khorasan Province, the ISIS Afghan affiliate, released a statement saying two of its “martyrdom seekers” staged the attacks. In the southern province of Kandahar, another suicide attack on a military convoy killed at least 11 children at a nearby school. Sixteen other people sustained injuries.
