Turkey reverses objection to Sweden joining NATO

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Monday that his country will approve NATO membership for Sweden if NATO members will “open the way” for Turkey to join the European Union. Erdoğan announced his support before leaving for the two-day NATO summit in Lithuania, which begins Tuesday. One of the top priorities of the two-day summit will be to decide how to respond to Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.

What’s U.S. President Joe Biden doing at the summit? He was scheduled to meet with Erdogan on Tuesday evening and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday. En route to the summit on Monday, Biden stopped in Britain and met with King Charles III and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.  It was Biden’s first time meeting with the king since the monarch’s coronation.
