Trump visits Las Vegas, surveys shooting aftermath
President Donald Trump, joined by first lady Melania Trump and members of Congress, landed in Las Vegas Wednesday to console survivors of the deadliest shooting in modern U.S. history. The president and first lady visited victims and emergency responders at a Las Vegas trauma center. He later met with police officers who were at the scene of the massacre. “We cannot be defined by the evil that threatens us,” Trump said. “We’re defined by our love, our caring, and our courage.” Trump noted many of the patients he spoke with were wounded trying to help others and that they made him “proud to be an American.” He called shooter Stephen Paddock a “sick” and “demented” man and said he was confident law enforcement would find out more about his motive. On Sunday, Paddock, perched on the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas hotel, opened fire on a crowd gathered for an outdoor country music festival. The attack killed 59 people and injured more than 500. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.), and Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.), who each had constituents killed or injured during the attack, joined the president during his visit.
