Trump readies nuclear subs after Russian official’s remarks

President Donald Trump said Friday he planned to move two nuclear submarines in response to recent comments made by former Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s security council. Trump did not share where the subs would be moved, only that they would be placed in appropriate regions. Trump described the statements from Medvedev as provocative and inflammatory. The subs are being repositioned in case Medvedev’s thoughtless comments are more than just words, according to Trump.

Words are important and can trigger serious unintended consequences, the president wrote on social media. “I hope this will not be one of those instances,” Trump added.

What did Medvedev say? Russia’s former top leader released a statement Monday criticizing Trump’s ultimatums for Russia to end its war in Ukraine or face severe economic pressure from the United States. Trump should know that each new ultimatum is a threat, moving Russia one step closer to war with the United States, Medvedev wrote.

Medvedev’s comments on Monday came as Trump reduced his timeline for a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire, saying he now gave Moscow about 12 days instead of a previously set 50-day period. Weeks earlier, Medvedev described Trump’s first ultimatum as theatrical and hollow.
