Tour bus crash kills 13 in California
Thirteen people died early Sunday morning when a tour bus returning to Los Angeles from a casino in southern California slammed into the back of a semi-truck. Another 31 people suffered injuries. It was one of the worst traffic accidents in California history. The crash happened on Interstate 10 just north of Palm Springs, where construction crews had been working through the night and traffic had slowed to a crawl. The bus was traveling much faster than the semi-truck, but it’s not clear whether the driver tried to slow before impact. He died at the scene and the bus, built in 1996, did not have seat belts or a black box recording device that would help investigators figure out what happened.
