Toronto police ID van driver, motive remains unclear

Police in Toronto identified the suspect in the Monday van attack that killed 10 people and injured 15 others as 25-year-old Alek Minassian, who drove a rented van into pedestrians on a busy sidewalk. Investigators continue to seek the motive behind the attack and have not ruled out terrorism. Police arrested Minassian blocks away from the scene of the attack in the North York neighborhood of northern Toronto. Police Chief Mark Saunders said the suspect had no previous record. Saunders said the attack looked deliberate, but “based on what we have, there is nothing that has it to compromise the national security at this time.” Investigators are interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance videos to look for clues about Minassian’s actions leading up to the incident. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his condolences to the victims, and said authorities “are monitoring this situation closely, and will continue working with our law enforcement partners around the country to ensure the safety and security of all Canadians.”
