Three tornados batter Tulsa during rare summer storm

Three tornadoes touched down in and around Tulsa, Okla., early Sunday morning, injuring at least 30 people. The National Weather Service classified the first twister as an EF2 that caused extensive damage to a shopping mall near midtown Tulsa. Many of the victims were finishing late-night meals at two area restaurants, TGI Fridays and Whataburger, when the tornado struck. First responders took at least 13 people to area hospitals, two with life-threatening injuries. The storms knocked out power to about 17,000 customers, with 4,200 still waiting for crews to restore service Sunday afternoon. Forecasters say tornadoes, common during the spring, are rare in August. The weather service predicted more heavy thunderstorms in the area throughout Monday.
