Texas Gov. Greg Abbott suffers burns on legs and feet
When Texas Gov. Greg Abbott appeared with Dallas city officials at a news conference Friday, he was in severe pain due to second- and third-degree burns on his legs and feet. Abbott was on vacation with his family in Jackson Hole, Wyo., last week when scalding water accidentally spilled on him sometime Thursday. Paralyzed from the waist down, Abbott, according to the governor’s spokesman, Matt Hirsch, still has nerve receptors in his legs and feet that feel pain. Doctors in Wyoming advised Abbott to curtail his schedule and remain there until there was no longer a risk of infection, but when news broke late Thursday about the mass shooting in Dallas that killed five police officers, Abbott decided to return to Texas immediately. Abbott is chairman of the Texas delegation to next week’s Republican National Convention in Cleveland, but the governor, Hirsch said, might not be able to attend, calling it a “day-to-day” decision.
