Teens charged in Iowa high school shooting
Six local teenagers, the youngest 14 and the oldest 17, each face one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder in a shooting Monday at East High School in Des Moines, Iowa. Investigators claim the teens targeted a 15-year-old boy in a drive-by shooting from different vehicles. The boy was found dead at the scene. Police said the victim was not a student but happened to be on school grounds. Most of the suspects were apprehended within one hour of the incident. Authorities have not indicated whether they found a motive for the shooting.
What happened? Students heard gunshots and screams from the parking lot at around 2:40 p.m. on Monday. Des Moines Sgt. Paul Parizek said police responded at 2:48 and found a 15-year-old boy had died and two female students, ages 16 and 18, had been wounded. The girls were taken to the hospital and were still in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon. East High School canceled classes Tuesday, postponed the ACT exam and parent-teacher conferences, and is offering grief counseling.
