Teen arrested after S.C. elementary school shooting
Teacher and one student expected to recover but condition of second student unclear
UPDATE (9/28/16, 5:45 p.m.): Investigators in Townville, S.C., say the teenage gunman arrested after opening fire at an elementary school first shot and killed his father. He used a handgun in his attack.
Police have not named the suspect or provided his exact age.
Hospital officials say one female teacher shot in the shoulder and one male student shot in the foot are in good condition. But the extent of the other student’s injuries isn’t clear.
Although one official initially said none of the students had life-threatening injuries, first responders airlifted one child to a hospital in nearby Greenville. Local newspaper reports say the student is in critical condition, but a hospital spokeswoman would not confirm that.
OUR EARLIER REPORT: Police in Townville, S.C., arrested a teenager this afternoon after a shooting at the local elementary school. One teacher and two students suffered injuries.
According to officials, the students’ injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Police did not immediately release information on the teacher’s condition.
Administrators and teachers at Townville Elementary School evacuated the other students and are asking parents to pick them up at a nearby church.
Townville is in the far south-eastern corner of the state, near the Georgia border.
