Taiwanese court moves to redefine marriage
Taiwan’s Constitutional Court today became the first in Asia to rule in favor of same-sex marriage. Two of the court’s 15 justices dissented, while one other judge recused himself from the case. The court gave the Taiwanese government two years to implement the ruling. It said the current civil code, which defines marriage as only between a man and woman, is in violation of Taiwan’s constitution. The island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party in December passed the first draft of the bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
