Suspect arrested in NYC mosque killing
Police have charged a suspect with murder in the deaths of a New York City imam and his friend Saturday afternoon. The suspect, Oscar Morel, is accused of shooting Imam Maulana Alauddin Akonjee and Thara Uddin as they walked out of a mosque in Queens. Morel was taken into custody late Sunday for hitting a bicyclist with his SUV. Police charged him with murder Monday after finding a revolver and clothes similar to those worn by the shooting suspect in his apartment. Officials have not disclosed the motive for the shooting, but New York Police Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said it was “certainly on the table that it’s a hate crime.”
