Millions fleeing Sudan or displaced by violence, UN says
The United Nations refugee agency on Tuesday said that the number of people projected to flee Sudan will likely surpass the previous estimate of one million people. Witnesses and activists say nearly 600,000 people have already fled to neighboring countries since fighting broke out between military factions in April. Nearly two million people have been displaced within the country, said UN refugee commission official Raouf Mazou. Christians in Sudan have long faced persecution, according to Voice of the Martyrs.
What are the latest developments in the conflict? Sudan’s army on Monday said the rival Rapid Support Forces had captured a major police base in the capital city of Khartoum. The RSF commander on Monday said his forces would observe a 48-hour ceasefire beginning Wednesday for the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha. UN representatives and foreign leaders have tried to broker a truce for several months.
