Storms batter southern Plains

A spate of tornadoes hit the southern Plains over the weekend, with more severe weather possible in the coming days. An EF2 tornado destroyed two homes and injured one person in Geronimo, Okla., on Saturday morning, the National Weather Service confirmed, with another suspected tornado damaging numerous homes in northwestern Arkansas. Kansas and Nebraska also saw several twisters on Friday.

Energy companies in Oklahoma and Arkansas reported tens of thousands of customers were without power on Saturday afternoon. A nursing home in Abilene, Texas, 150 miles west of Fort Worth, was evacuated due to strong winds that damaged homes and businesses, according to the Abilene Reporter-News. So far, no deaths have been reported due to the storms.

School districts in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas canceled classes on Monday due to forecasted hail, strong wind gusts, and a flood watch. Strong winds and hail are also forecasted for West Texas, and the National Weather Service said the storm system will move into western Arkansas later Monday. The severe weather, including the possibility of more tornadoes, will likely continue into Tuesday.
